Fire at Danforth Tech
You may have heard about last week’s fire at Toronto’s Danforth CTI. My son goes there, or did. I don’t know if he’ll be going back to finish the year because no one’s telling us anything.
Last Thursday and Friday he went to Eastern, as directed, for instruction. It was a joke – he sent me pictures of teachers chatting with one another – and he begged (via iMessage) me to let him go home. Before I allow it, I wrote, I want you to go ask a teacher if there will be any instruction and if there’ll be any assigned school work. A few minutes later he wrote back: He said no and that I should play on my iPhone if I’m bored. Go home, I responded.
Today was more of same. Except we’re learning about altercations between Eastern kids and Danforth kids. And I’m not about to expose my son to this just so that he can sit in a room and play on his iPhone all day.
Apparently, the rest of the week is “optional attendance” and they’re to pick up a schedule at Danforth on Friday. No formal notification to parents. No details on what happens next week. Five weeks until exams and no instruction.
This, frankly, is bullshit. The kids, and their parents, deserve better.
This is just my guess. School boards receive money for every student in attendance each day. The teachers are required to be at a school or on school business in order that they be paid.
